Importance of Chandra Darshan In The Vedas

“Regardless of the shadows that cross the moon and make it appear less than it is, to the moon, it is always full. Moon is with us.”These words spoken by Lord Buddha are very true but to us, ‘Chandra the Moon’ is a very revered deity. It is also a significant ‘graha’ or planet of the ‘Navgraha’. So, it’s being hidden in the shadows is not accepted.Moon’s observance of sightings is very important to us. The event of Moon’s sight after the Amavasya or the No Moon Day is known as Chandra Darshan. This event of seeing Lord Moon, just after the New Moon day, is very auspicious. It is very auspicious and has great religious importance.

Moon or Chandra is also identified in the Vedas with the Vedic Lunar Deity Soma. What does the word Soma mean? The juice that comes out of the sap of the plants is referred to as Soma. So, Moon, given the name of Soma, Moon becomes the lord of plants and vegetation. It has been called an important ‘Graha’ or planet of the ‘Navgraha’, which influences life on Earth. In our Vedas, a vivid description of Lord Moon has been given. It has been described as young, beautiful, fair. It is two-armed and has a club and a lotus in his hand. What is the vehicle on which the moon rides? It rides on a chariot that is pulled by ten white horses. It has been associated with dew and has been called the God of fertility. Other names given to the Moon are Rajanipati, Kshupakara and Indu. The day associated with the Moon is Monday due to its linking with Soma. Chandra has been married to 27 Nakshatras, who are known to be daughters of Daksha. Chandra is the father of Budha, the planet Mercury and his mother is Tara.
