Earlier from 1900 to 2000, this festival was celebrated on 13th and 14th January. In some years including the years 1933 and 38, this festival was also celebrated on 14 January. Every year there is a delay of few minutes in the time of Sun’s entry from Sagittarius to Capricorn and hence this time keeps increasing every year. In about 80 to 100 years, this time increases by one day. In this way, from the year 2080, this festival will be celebrated on 14th and 15th January.

Makar Sankranti is known by different names in different states of the country. In Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala it is called Sankranti, while in Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh it is popular as Khichdi festival. In Tamil Nadu it is called Pongal and in Gujarat and adjoining regions it is called Uttarayan festival.
