With various customs observed in Hinduism, Janeu Sanskar (Upanayana Sanskar) is one of the most important, even before marriage. It is the tenth sanskar mentioned in the ancient Sanatan Hindu Dharma. During this ceremony, the boy is required to wear a holy white thread (Janeu) and perform many rituals. Various castes, including Brahmins and Kshatriyas, conduct this Sanskar.
The term ‘Upanayana’ is made up of two words: ‘Up” means near, and ‘Nayana” means vision. As a result, this literally implies keeping ourselves out of darkness (ignorance) and moving towards light (spiritual understanding). Thus, it is one of the most well-known and revered rites. Today, we will discuss various auspicious 2025 Upnayan Sanskar Muhurats to help you plan your janeu sanskar.
Typically, Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas perform a threading ritual for the groom prior to his wedding. The ritual is sometimes referred to as Yagnopavitra. Except for Shudras, everyone in Hinduism is allowed to wear Janeu.

Now that you know about Upnayan Sanskar Muhurats, let’s look at why they’re significant and how the rituals are done.
Janeu Ceremony Importance
Every tradition or ritual observed in Hinduism has a special significance. The Janeu ritual marks a boy’s transition from childhood to adolescence. To commemorate this accomplishment, the priest weaves a sacred thread (Janeu) over the boy’s left shoulder and beneath his right arm. This Janeu is an interknit of three thread streams.
Janeu mostly comprises of three threads. They symbolise Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, as well as Devaruna, Pitruruna, and Rishiruna. Additionally, some people think they symbolise Sattva, Raha, and Tama. Fourth, it represents the three steps of the Gayatri Mantra. The fifth symbolises the three ashrams. In the Sannyas Ashram, Yajnopavita is removed.
Nine Chords: Janeu chords consist of three strings each. Making a total of nine strings.
There are five knots in Janeu, representing Brahma, Dharma, Ardha, Kama, and Moksha. It is also a sign of Panchakarma, Gyandarias, and Yajna, all of which number five.
Length of Janeu: Yagnopavit’s length is 96 fingers. It requires the person wearing janeu to strive to study 64 arts and 32 disciplines. The 32 Vidyas include four Vedas, four Upvedas, six Darshana, six agama, three Sutra, and nine Aranyakas.
Wearing a Janeu: When wearing Janeu, the youngster merely grips the stick. He only wears one article of clothes that has no stitching. A yellow fabric is worn around the neck. The youngster and his family should participate in a yagna while wearing the janeu. The Janeu is worn after “Guru Diksha” and will be replaced whenever it becomes unclean.
Gayatri Mantra: Janeu begins with the Gayatri Mantra. There are three phases to the Gayatri Mantra. The first stage is ‘Tatsvituvarnrayan’, the second is ‘Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi’, and the third is ‘Dhio yo na: Prachodayat’.
Mantra for Janeu Sanskar:
यज्ञोपवीतं परमं पवित्रं प्रजापतेर्यत्सहजं पुरस्तात् ।
आयुष्यमग्रं प्रतिमुञ्च शुभ्रं यज्ञोपवीतं बलमस्तु तेजः।।
So, this ceremony holds a deep significance. You can read more about Janeu Ceremony Importance here.
Fun Fact: There are references of ladies wearing janeu as a necklace. In antiquity, married men wore two holy threads, or janeu, one for themselves and one for their spouses.
Janeu Sanskar Vidhi
So, how did Janeu Sanskar Vidhi perform? Here are the rites observed by Hindus during an auspicious Upnayan Sanskar Muhurat:
- Before beginning the Janeu Sanskar, a child’s hair is shaved (Mundan).
- On Janeu (Upanayana) muhurat day, the boy bathes first.
- Then sandalwood paste is put to his head and body, and the family members begin the Havan preparations.
- After that, the young devotee worships Lord Ganesha and does Yagya while just wearing his pants.
- The Gayatri Mantra is said 10,000 times to invoke the Gods and Goddesses.
- The boy then vows to follow Shastra’s teachings and fasts.
- Following this, he eats Churma with other boys his age and takes another wash.
- A guide, father, or other senior member of the household recites the Gayatri Mantra in front of a child and informs him, “You are a Brahmin from today.”
- Then they give him a danda (stick) and tie the Mekhala and Kandora on him.
- This freshly anointed Brahmin then requests Bhiksha (alms) from others around him.
- As part of the custom, the child runs away from home post-dinner as he is going to Kashi for studies.
- Soon after, people seek to get him back by bribing him in the name of the wedding.
Hold on, however! There are various guidelines to follow when completing the janeu sanskar rites. What are they? Let us find out.
